Abby's 6 Month Checkup

Abby had another fantastic checkup! Her updated stats are:

Abby's pediatrician says she's doing beautifully. She's hitting her milestones just right and appears to be (and is!) a really happy, healthy little girl. Since our last check-up Abby has refined rolling from back-to-front and now does it pretty much the second you put her down, but still refuses to roll front-to-back. I'm trying to give her lots of tummy time and nudges here and there to, hopefully, help her practice and re-learn this forgotten skill. Of course, now that Abby's learned to sit up on her own (yeah!) she's even that much more less inclined to go back to the rolling thing. Another milestone (mentioned in a previous post) is that Abby has started 'eating solids'. Or more apt, she's started getting spoon-fulls or rice cereal that mostly make it into her mouth. Oh, my goodness how she loves this! When Nate and I sit down to dinner Abby is not happy if she's not in her high chair munching on her own dinner as well. It's so cute how she loves to do big girl things now. For Nate and I, it's really nice having her be a part of the family dinner table (which is something that is meaningful to both of us). Other milestones include giggling when her tummy is tickled, pushing backwards when she's in her walker, crazy bouncing when she's in her jumperoo, and sort of giving you kisses in that she opens her mouth wide and dive-bombs for either your mouth or nose.

All in all another great checkup! Next one has been pushed out to three months instead of two so you'll get a full report in November (keep checking back on the blog for the day-to-day dealings of Abby, oh, yeah, and her parents, too).

Abby Turns 6 Months

Today Abby turned six months old. It's hard to believe that six months have already passed from the first time I held my little girl in my arms. I remember the feeling of such joy and peace when she was first placed on my chest and how awesome it felt to finally have her in my life. Six months later she is still a complete joy and I still feel such an awe-inspiring feeling of peace whenever I look at her. The adorable grins, kisses, and hugs she sends my way certainly add to this wonderful experience of having a daughter in my arms.

A new today was that Abby learned how to scoot backwards in her walker. Oh, she was so proud of herself with this accomplishment!

Another one of the 'big deals' about turning six months is that Nate and I finally allowed our family to feed her non-breastmilk. Other than the first few days of formula supplementation (nurses told us we needed to supplement with formula to help get rid of her jaundice, but pediatrician soon told us this was unnecessary) she hasn't had anything but Momma's Milk. This has been a minor battle for the past few months as it seems like everyone has wanted to feed her something (baby food, rice cereal, red velvet cupcake frosting) and doesn't quite understand why we were so hard-lined about the date. Well, now that the six month recommended age has come it's feeding party time!

We went over to my parent's house for a quick dinner and ended up feeding Abby her second taste of rice cereal (this past Monday she had two licks of a spoonful of cereal but wasn't really into it) and after seeing how much she ate I think she likes it!

Rice cereal is YUMMY!

It looks like we'll be starting to feed Abby more than just Mommy milk from this day on. I still hope that she wants breastmilk for a long time, though, as I'm not ready to give that up yet!

Trivial but Annoying

I know this is trivial, but it annoys me (and I fully recognize that it's probably annoying me a lot more than it should lately due to me not feeling well from catching Abby's cold).

It's when you're checking out at, say, the grocery store. You use your debit card and run it through the debit card reader/payment box thing. At the end of your transaction it says your total is $104.12. It next asks if you'd like cash back to which you answer 'no'. It then asks if the $104.12 total is okay. UGH! Why?! Why does it ask if that total is okay? It's already displayed the total once so if it was a problem you could simply ask the cashier to remove an item or delete the entire transaction. I could understand if you've asked for cash back and your total is now different asking you to reconfirm this new total (although I still think that's silly, albeit less so). But to ask me to reconfirm a total that's already been displayed and accepted once just bugs the heck out of me. I just don't recall debit card machines doing this in the past, but they seem to be in every store I visit. I liked it before when they didn't ask this double total check. Rant done.

See I told you this was a trivial issue.

Abby's First Cold

This past Thursday Abby came down with her first cold. Thank goodness it's just been a runny nose and occasional fussiness. I can't stand kids with runny, snotty, green goo running down their faces (give me a poopy diaper any day!) so I've been sucking snot right and left it seems. So much so that Abby now cries when I put her in her changing table (where I've mostly been putting her to suck out the snot) even if it's just for a normal diaper change. It's kind of cute in a way as she's definitely letting me know that she's NOT happy with what I'm doing. Thankfully her nose hasn't become too chapped and red looking from all the sucking and snot wiping. Another thing to be thankful for is that she hasn't spiked a fever yet! The downside is that Nate and I are learning how quickly baby germs spread as we both have sore throats and are feeling a little under the weather.

This first cold has also made me wonder if she would have gotten sicker sooner had she not been breastfed or had been in daycare instead of at home. Then I think of all the people who say their sickest kid was their breastfed kid or that their daycare baby was their healthy one. So who knows. Since Nate and I believe that me breastfeeding and staying at home are what's best for our family I'll say that it's due to these things that Abby hasn't gotten sick before now! :-) Feel free to agree or disagree!

Another plus of this cold is that she's napping like a champ. She went down for a 3 hour nap yesterday which was mommy heaven! I got so much done, it was almost like before I had her. Of course her afternoon was filled with a bunch of 20 minute naps, but I choose to focus on the one long one. Abby's currently down for another morning nap and we're almost 40 minutes into it so I'm hoping that this is another long nap. Go cold! (Er, maybe go long nap that was created by cold... but go away cold and stay long nap!)
