7 Quick Takes Friday - Volume 11

--- 1 ---
I recognize this is my third blog post in a row that's of the 7 Quick Takes format. I promise that at some point in time I'll do a more specific blog post on some awesome event or moment that occurs in our life, but right now we're experiencing "normal fun" life instead of "exciting momentous" life.

--- 2 ---
We are so close to finishing our back yard projects that I can taste it! This past weekend Nate and I (with a little help from Abby) painted the fence on our side yard, filled the sandbox back up with good sand (instead of yucky crushed rock that we'd accidentally ordered last year), and put in river rock in the new edging areas we dug a while ago as well as a few spots in the yard that were short on rock coverage.

Here's a view of how dirty our fence was (on the right) compared to fresh paint (on the far left). It's now so bright in our backyard that you need sunglasses on a cloudy day!

I had my second naked incidence at our local pool this week. The first involved me looking up from watching Abby play in the children's hot tub to see a man stepping out of the men's shower room naked as a jaybird. He opened the door to the pool area, must have felt a breeze where no breeze should be, then quickly tried to wrap his towel around himself while skedaddling back to the changing room. A minute or so later he walked back out with his swim trunks on. Is there really a point where you're so old you forget to put on clothes? Scary! The second incident was when Abby and I were showing after finishing our pool time. As I was drying off Abby wandered down a hallway that I thought had the door closed so I let her out of my sight for a minute to finish toweling off. When I went to look for her I suddenly realized that the door wasn't shut and Abby was running, with her cute naked tushie bouncing, towards the pool! She actually climbed down onto the steps as I ran after her. Thankfully I was able to call out from the doorway to a lady that was right next to her to have her bring Abby back to me. See, I was only half covered myself as the tiny towel wouldn't wrap around to hide my backside! Had no one else been near her I would have sprinted half-naked to the pool to grab her (as she floats like a rock) but was so happy I didn't have to resort to that indignity. Next week I'll make sure to keep a tighter hand on her after shower time!

I'm so thankful that Abby takes after Nate with her eating habits. If you put food in front of the girl she's happy to munch away on it, whereas I'm picky and naturally tend towards sweets instead of fruits and veggies. It's amazing how much our eating habits rub off on her. If I'm eating a cookie, by gosh she wants one, too. If it's an apple in my hand she has to have at least a slice in hers. Honestly, she's teaching me to eat better just so that I know that the food she gets is healthier!

Here she is showing down on leftover broccoli while ignoring the peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

--- 5 ---
Nate and I have been talking about being healthier with our eating choices so one of the things I've tried to focus on has been to reduce and/or eliminate High Fructose Corn Syrup by not buying products that contain it. Holy Hannah! I had no clue how much stuff contained HFCS! It's making shopping a bit more difficult as I can't just breeze down aisles and toss food into the cart while mentally counting down the clock until Abby's "I don't want to be grocery shopping any longer" timer runs out.

--- 6 ---
Last night was fun with the neighborhood kids. Abby and I were outside "painting", or rather she was painting and I was sitting in a lawn chair reading a book, when a kid from next door came over to play with Abby. They saw the paint and grabbed a paintbrush and dived into painting as well. Then another kid showed up. Then another. In the end we had five kids in the driveway each with their own cup of paint just having a ball painting up the driveway. I should mention that this paint is actually sidewalk "chalk" paint where you mix equal parts corn starch and water and then add in food coloring. It brushes on as a liquid but as the water evaporates just the corn starch is left which makes it look almost like chalk. It easily sprays off the sidewalk and driveway, but does tend to stick around on skin a bit longer due to the food coloring. It's my most successful Pinterest pin yet!

Our water bill was almost double what it normally is so we're thinking we have a leak somewhere. I'm really hoping it's where Nate was recently digging to put in the new edges because if it's not we have no idea where it might be as there's no puddle of water to help guide us. Hopefully it's a quick fix so we can get in a bike ride and a swim this weekend!

7 Quick Takes Friday - Volume 10

--- 1 ---
I am SO thankful that Nate is home today after a week of being in Charlotte, NC for a leadership conference for work. Two week-long business trips in a month (or really three weeks since he was only home seven days before leaving again) is super hard...on ME! The first week I was all "Abby and I are doing great, house is super-extra clean, I'm totally fun Mom... I'm AWESOME! This week has been "the food on the floor will eventually get picked up, no one died from watching all four Tinkerbell movies over and over again, and hey she's alive... I'm SO TIRED!

Speaking of tired...Abby took a three hour nap today and when I went in to wake her up I couldn't help but take a picture. This was her "Mom quit shining the light in my face" pose after I'd taken a few pictures of her sleeping quietly. (Note: Normally I'm not crazy enough to wake a sleeping toddler, but as it was already 4pm and we needed to get to my parents house for them to take over watching her I risked it.)

--- 2 ---
With Nate's help I think I finally discovered why I've been waking up at 5am every day since he's been gone. I kept wondering what in our house started up that early...the heat/air kicking on, the wind being extra windy at that moment, a neighbor needing to leave for work early this week, etc. When I mentioned all my ideas to him, Nate gave me a funny laugh and said "Nope, that's when you start hogging the bed and cuddling with me. I think you wake up because there's no one to cuddle with." Well, now that makes sense.
--- 3 ---
Abby is officially peeing in the potty! On Tuesday I was putzing around in the house when I suddenly realized that Abby was being quiet. Too quiet. I went on a mission to find out what mischief she was getting into when I heard noises coming from the guest bathroom. Upon opening the door I saw my little girl with her pants pulled down, her diaper half off, and attempting to take her shirt off. When she saw me she proudly proclaimed "Mom go potty! Mom go potty!". I figured I'd humor her and give her a couple praises but was sure that this was another "I go potty" moment where she simply sits on the toilet and then jumps right off. Imagine my surprise when I looked in the little potty and found that she'd actually peed! Since then she's gone multiple times in the potty and even had the child care ladies at the gym take her to the big girl potty. I'm so excited for this next stage of her development!
--- 4 ---
I'm also being reminded of what a cheap-skate I am. Abby is ready for pull-ups and a bigger sized diaper (size 6) for naps and nights, but I still have size 5 diapers left and I just can't throw them away and waste money like that. So Abby gets to be squished in too small diapers just another day or two.
--- 5 ---
My parents were awesome in taking Abby for two hours for me tonight so I could clean the house before Nate got home. I know that coming home to a clean house makes returning from a trip that much easier so I really wanted to clean the pit of gross that my house was, but was finding it difficult with Abby's "help". With her out shopping with the grandparents I was able to turn on my iPod at full blast and race around the house cleaning as fast as my fingers and feet would carry me. I say race because at one point in time I was moving a chair and chiding myself for not cleaning all the water off when I realized that it was actually some of my sweat that had fallen off of my face. Thank goodness I was too lazy to change out of my gym clothes from this morning!
--- 6 ---
It's a sad thing but I have to admit that I've watched all five Twilight movies three times each this week. Eek! The movies are so campy and cheesy but I just love watching them. Plus, they're one of the few movies we own on Amazon so that I don't have to get up off the couch to change the DVD when I want to watch the next movie in a series (i.e., my Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, or Star Wars DVDs). I read somewhere that Kristen Stewart used wigs in some of the movies to cut back on her prep time and after seeing these movies over and over you can totally tell. Even accounting for her potential hair growth over the two years that the movies take place her hairline and style change way too frequently. I feel so sad knowing that.
--- 7 ---
A bridge collapsed in my state today, but thankfully (at current press time) no one died. I can only imagine how scary that must have been for the drivers of the cars that fell into the water. I'm so thankful that no one was seriously injured or killed. Please prayer for the swift healing of those involved in the accident!

7 Quick Takes Friday - Volume 9

--- 1 ---
I'm feeling a little burned out on blog posting after my crazy long posts about our Taiwan trip. I'm not joking when I say each post took hours to create by the time I'd written what I wanted to say, found the pictures I wanted to post, resorted the pictures as they never get uploaded in the order they're supposed to, added descriptions to each picture, spell and grammar checked the post, and then finally clicked the Publish button. So I thought I'd go back to an old 'friend' and actually link-up to the 7 Quick Takes Friday posts to help me jump back into normal blogging. I had to go back to November before I found my last Quick Takes. Eesh. I think I need to focus on this one a bit more. :-)

--- 2 ---
We are currently updating our backyard. Yep, another house project. Thankfully this one doesn't require moving out or last minute craziness. A few months ago we had a nasty windstorm (103 mph winds were recorded) which caused damage to our fence. Nate was able to rig up a short-term solution by installing two brace posts to hold the fence up, but when he went out one Saturday morning to actually repair the fence he found that over half of the wood had rotted and was just another windstorm away from causing more expensive damage to our neighbor's fence. After hemming and hawing we finally decided that we would replace that section of fencing with vinyl instead of wood. Our backyard will look a little wonky with one side being wood painted white, the back side being Version A of vinyl, and the other side being Version B of vinyl (because of course the current style of vinyl we have is no longer available) but I think they'll match close enough that it won't be a big eyesore. Plus, I'm just excited to have a fence back so I can let Abby run around in the backyard with one eye and ear on her instead of two.

--- 3 ---
Nate's parents have a tire swing at their house in Portland and Abby loved it so much that we decided to put one up at our house, too, instead of buying an expensive swing set. Les Schwab gave us the tire for free (from their bad tire pile) and we were able to purchase other needed supplies from Lowe's for around $20. Not too shabby for what we paid, I think!

Abby checking out her new tire swing. You can also see a small spot of where our fence is missing. Nate put up mesh to be a small deterrent from unauthorized entry to or exits from our yard, which has been very helpful. Still not used to neighbors being able to see us though as many Saturday mornings I walk out in my pink, fuzzy bathrobe before remembering that more eyes can see me now.

--- 4 ---
In other Abby news...she's learned to pedal on her bike!

--- 5 ---
Am I the only one that gets really confused when you hear your own voice? I just listened to the video above to make sure it was the one where she actually pedaled the bike herself and I feel like some other person inhabited my body for a few seconds and talked instead of me. It's like a chain-smoking, red-necked, stereotypical sorority/valley girl (and since I was a sorority girl I can say this) came forth from deep inside. Now I'm wondering if I sound like this all the time or just when I'm talking to Abby. And is she going to think I'm a moron because I sound like this or will my two diplomas (Bachelors and Masters) convince her otherwise?

--- 6 ---
We went to Kadlec's Kid Safe Saturday last weekend where they turn a portion of the hospital's parking lot into a fun "learn about safety" zone for kids. There was a bicycle course, free helmet fittings, fire trucks, police cars, boats, pamphlets for various "safe but fun" activities like swimming lessons, boat safety course, etc. All three of us had fun exploring the different vehicles, eating the free popcorn, and getting lots of free pens and crayons. The best part, in my opinion, was checking out the MedVac helicopter. It was so tiny! I had a preconceived notion, from all the TV shows I've seen with medical helicopters, that it would be nice and big like other helicopters you see. But this one had room enough for two pilots, a nurse, and then the patient on the bed. Equipment was tacked to the walls and not a wall space was spared from being useful. I'm very happy we got to check it out, but even happier that we've never had need of one!

She was SO excited when she was told it was okay to touch things!

--- 7 ---
And finally, we installed Nate's Christmas present from this past Christmas. A bike carrier for his bike so that he can take Abby riding. Previously we had a carrier behind the bike that she rode in, but since it was attached to my bike it made for some very slow bike trips. Having Nate carry Abby means we actually can go at a decent speed! It took her a little bit of time to get used to get used to being put into the seat (the seat sits at an angle when the bike is resting on its kickstand) but took to riding like a champ. She holds onto the back of Nate's shirt and peeks around to see all she wants to see. I'm looking forward to some free Saturday mornings or evenings for a fun bike ride along the river. Maybe Rosie's ice cream afterwards!

All set for our first bike ride!
