32 Weeks!

I'm 32 weeks today! Can you believe I only have eight more weeks to go? I surely can't. For the longest time I figured that I'd have to make it through Halloween, then Thanksgiving, then Christmas before I could really focus on baby time. Then Halloween past. Thanksgiving ran by. Now Christmas is over. It's baby time!

Here are the pros and cons of pregnancy at this point:

Pros
* I feel baby move all the time now. In fact, it's almost every two hours that I feel at least some movement if not downright dancing in my tummy.
* I got to feel the baby having hiccups!
* Passed my glucose tolerance test so no gestational diabetes for me!
* I've started having Braxton Hicks - a cool milestone towards delivery

Cons
* Sleep is a distant memory
* Baby has learned how to kick my ribs
* Started having sciatic nerve pain
* Braxton Hicks make it hard to breathe at times

Overall, still feeling pretty good. Slow, but good. I can definitely say that even though the exhaustion factor is increasing the excitement faster is increasing at a greater pace. I can't wait to get the house ready for the baby. I can't wait to hold this baby in my arms. And I can't wait to see Nate with our little one. Eight more weeks!

32 week belly photo. I'm also showing off the new night attire that Nate bought me for Christmas. (I forgot I wanted to take a picture until I'd already changed out of my real clothes.) The picture is minus the coordinating robe (white with red paisley print) as, frankly, it makes me look as big as a house but it's oh so comfy. Nate did a great job on this Christmas present!

Christmas

This year Nate and I spent Christmas Eve morning with my family before heading down to Portland to spend Christmas day with Nate's family. I was a little apprehensive on how Christmas would go as last year I, well, couldn't wait for Christmas to be over. Between some family stresses, wedding planning stress, and last minute rushing around it just didn't feel like "the most wonderful time of the year". So this year I was adament that I would have a fabulous Christmas! First part of the plan meant planning a little more in advance so there wasn't the bazillion items to do last minute. Secondly, I tried to let any stresses that might come up just roll off of me. Finally, I went back to what this season is all about and tried to focus more on that. These three things helped me have a great Christmas this year! It was full of family laughter, yummie treats, and an overall relaxful few days. I can't wait until Christmas next year when I get to introduce this little one to all the wonder and joy of the season.

I wish I had a copy of the family portrait that my family took, but it's still on my mom's camera. As soon as I can get it I'll post it here.

You Know You're Pregnant When...

You know you're pregnant when:

* You are only half-way through wrapping Christmas presents and have already had to stop twice to take breathing breaks
* Your shoelaces are now tied on the side of your shoes as opposed to the middle
* Your husband is supporting your back to help you get out of bed, and when he takes that support away you fall back down :-)
* You shut the bathroom door on your stomach because you forgot how big you were
* You can't help but grunt when bending over - no matter how hard you try not to
* Getting up to pee twice in the night is considered a decent night of sleep
* No matter how stressed you get, no matter what may go wrong in the day, a big kick from your baby can make your heart smile and all the yuckiness of the world fall away.

Can't wait to meet my little one. Nine more weeks!

This video is a great retelling of Jesus' birth via our current social media. I was laughing out loud at work. Great way to retell the Nativity Story!

Living Christmas Tree

This weekend Nate and I joined his family in seeing a production called The Living Christmas Tree at First Baptist Church. The premise is a pretty neat one. Basically it's a two-hour Christmas carol extravaganze, but the Living Christmas Tree part comes from the second act where a huge man-made Christmas tree has people standing on platforms and singing as the Christmas tree. Hmm - that really doesn't do it justice. I guess you'll just have to look at the pictures below to see what I mean.

It was extra special because, while we were in the audience with Nate's Grandparents and cousins (Heather, Melany, and Melany's husband Ryan) Nate's Aunt and Uncle were singing. Everyone did a really great job with both the acapella songs and the songs sung to music. It was a little different than I expected in that, while a few traditional songs were song, most of the songs were what I'd call a rephrasing of their original version. So instead of singing "Joy to the World" like we all know the song focused more on the "Repeast the Sounding Joy" chorus with different verses.

Finally, I found out that this production changes each year with the Living Christmas Tree version only happening every three years. So next year, which I fully plan to go to, there will be some other type of Christmas performance. It's nice finding out all the options that our town has for entertainment when you really start looking for it. :-)

This is what I meant by people in the Christmas tree. You can see their faces here, but not their bodies. The other interesting thing is that while everyone looks like same height on each row, they are actually standing on steps to get them that way.

Hopefully this gives you a good view of what the lighted tree looked like. It was almost like a technicolor show with the tree blinking and flashing and twinkling with all the lights in time to the music. Very pretty!

28 Weeks

I am officially 28 weeks pregnant this week. How in the world am I 28 weeks? I only have 12 weeks left! I remember when I hit 12 weeks and was so excited to be that far along (the all-day nausea was not something I was celebrating, however). Now, here I am on the flip-side and looking down a very short tunnel to the birth of my first baby. I'm going to be a MOM! Can you believe it! I mean, I know I'm already a mom in the sense that everything I do affects this baby so I have to take care of myself, but I'm so looking forward to the moment where this little person currently inside of me gets placed into my arms. Oh, how I look forward to that day.

Let's see...the positives and negatives at this point are:

Positives
* Baby is REALLY moving. I feel little and big jabs and kicks all the time now.
* My stomach actually moves with some of these kicks. If I'm sitting in a somewhat lounge position (like on a couch) I can literally see my stomach jump a few centimeters as baby says hello.
* This last week I've gotten at least six hours of straight sleep each night. SIX!!!! Oh, how glorious is that. I never understood the value of a deep night's sleep until night after night I was getting up every 2-3 hours. Now, I understand that this will probably go away again but I'm loving the time while it's here. Thank you baby (and bladder!) for not waking me up!
* Nate can feel the baby if they kick or punch really, really hard. Seeing Nate's face when he feels the baby is just...well, undescribeable. I LOVE how invested in the pregnancy he is.
* Another ultrasound appointment! Baby was NOT cooperative, though as s/he kept their hands around their face the ENTIRE time. So no ultrasound pics to post. The ones were got are so hard to interpret, but I'll still scrapbook them!

Negatives
* I'm starting to feel the tiredness of the first trimester. Many nights I'm wanting to go to bed by 8pm.
* Starting to feel a little anxious about all that needs to be done between now and baby. I want to buy, organize, and do but feeling so tired makes this difficult.

Huh - that's all the negatives I can think of right now so things must be pretty good still. :-)

The last fun thing about hitting this milestone is that Nate and I have started to take our prenatal classes. Only one so far, but we both learned some things and felt that it was worth our time. Looking forward to the next one this upcoming week!

Thought I'd show my injury. These rugburn like marks were made when I bumped my stomach into one of our counter stools. I literally bumped my stomach so lightly that when I noticed these marks hours later it took me a LONG time to figure out what I'd bumped into to cause the marks. My skin doesn't have a lot of room to give any more!

Multnomah Falls

As we traveled to Portland to enjoy a Thanksgiving feast with Nate's parents we decided to stop by Multnomah Falls. Friends from California had come to celebrate Thanksgiving with us and we thought this was one of the best stops between Pasco and Portland for them to do a few minutes of sight-seeing. It was even more fun than usual as we realized as we stopped that the Falls had recently received freezing rain and so the entire grounds were covered in a thin sheet of ice. Free ice skating!!! We carefully stepped and slid our way to the falls and saw an amazing sight. Snow and ice can cause adults to moan and groan, but it really does make for the prettiest of landscapes.

A view of the falls in all their glory. The snow made it look like a winter wonderland and the ice made everything sparkle so pretty.

Nate and I bundled up from the cold. You can see that it's still raining, but a little rain didn't stop us. Although it did shorten our visit by quite a bit!

The group of us. Blaise, Jonathan, Me, Nate, and Valerie in front. Blaise and Valerie were Nate's roommates at MIT (they met in the dorms and then decided to rent a house together for the next six years!) and they're still friends after all this time.

It was especially fun seeing them at this time as Valerie is currently pregnant with their second child. She's due early February (the 9th I believe) so it was fun to compare pregnancy stories and bellies!

First Snow

I woke up this morning to snow outside! Three thoughts are running through my head. The kid in me says "Woo hoo!". The worker in me says "Come on two hour delay!". The adult in me says "Oh, crap.". Right now the kid view is winning!!!

Babymoon at Skamania Lodge

This past weekend Nate and I took a much anticipated vacation, or Babymoon, to make sure we had at least one last weekend of relaxation with just the two of us before the holiday madness and baby craziness hit. Boy, were we really glad we did this. It was basically a weekend of sleeping in, long walks in the woods, and just talking and catching up with each other.

On Friday we drove up to Skamania Lodge, which is outside of Stevenson, WA. When we got there I was immediately impressed by the lodge itself. Out of the middle of nowhere there was suddenly this massive wooden structure with lights all aglow. When you walked inside the first thing I spotted was the fireplace cracking away. Ah, the smell of campfire in the fall. I really missed out on a few camping trips this year (all-day sickness didn't leave much time for driving and hanging out) so it was an awesome smell to be smelling. We got checked in and headed up to our rooms and basically decided that it was a room service for dinner type of night. After eating a yummy dinner we both intended to pass out. What ended up happening is that Nate passed out and I lay in bed for the next hour trying to subtly shake him to stop the snoring without actually waking him up. An hour later I gave up and decided I would play on my iPhone. It was sort of evil of me but everytime he snored I'd point the phone in his direction so the light shown on him and wave the phone back and forth for a mini light show. Hee! After another hour of this I got bored and figured I'd read my magazine (lights on and all - hee hee!). Well, he woke up (no surprise there) and, after explaining why I had the lights on, he decided that he'd play his phone games until I fell asleep in the hopes that I would at least pass out for a bit. Two hours later I finally stopped the light sleeping/waking up routine and fell into deep sleep. Thank goodness!!! When we both woke up the next day it wasn't exactly the refreshed feeling we both wanted, but overall had been in bed for 14 hours so it made sense to get up.

Our Saturday was spent having a yummy brunch, hiking in the woods (I was able to go 2.5 miles of uphill and downhill!), goofing off in the pool, and driving in to Edgefield to have dinner McMenamins (Nate's favorite brewery). By the end of the day I was COMPLETELY exhausted. In fact, I was close to done after the hike but really wanted to get in the water instead of taking a nap or something. Funny thing I found out, though, was that when in the water if I wasn't in an upright position I'd get really sea sick. Here I thought I could just float away on my back, but every time I did so I wanted to hurl. :-) Nate had a bit of fun with this for a while, but overall was a good sport in keeping me upright.

On Sunday we woke up and headed down for the hotel's breakfast buffet which turned out to be a Champagne Brunch. Oh, how I missed the mimosas! Nate had two for me, though. Great guy that he is. After stuffing ourselves with yummy food, we checked out of the hotel and decided to stop by the Columbia River Interpretive Center. Basically it talked about the history of Lewis and Clark Expidition upon reaching the Columbia River up to present times. It was pretty darn interesting. From Indian artifacts to old fashioned chain saws to household goods. There was something for both Nate and I to be interested in.

One of the displays that I thought was really interesting was this Russian gentleman's rosary collection. Here is a picture of me standing in front of one of ten rosary displays. You'll see that behind me are oodles and oodles of rosaries in all shapes and sizes. It was interesting seeing all the materials used to make all the different styles. Very neat.

After finishing the Exhibition Center we drove home and basically collapsed on the couch. It was a great weekend, one that we both admit was needed, but we were also glad to be home. Even at the end of my second trimester moving is tougher, long trips are harder, and by golly there's just no place like home. Overall, we'd definitely recommend Skamania Lodge (with the caveat that while the rooms are nice they're not extra special). If you end up visiting, I hope you have as great of a time as we did!

Baby's Room

This past weekend Nate's parents came up from Portland to help us paint the baby's room. The plan was to have the room entirely prepped with paint purchased so that the work could get started bright and early Saturday morning. That's not exactly how it worked out. During the week Nate had come down with a pretty bad cold, so the painting party was actually cancelled and we figured we'd get his parents up here another weekend to paint. So, while I'd picked out colors, we didn't actually go and buy any paint to paint the rooms. Then Friday evening came, and with Nate feeling better, it was decided that his parents would make the trip up here.

So here we are. It's Friday night, we have no paint, we have no food, and I'm exhausted. Sounds like fun, right? :-) Well, we make a trip to the paint store figuring that we for sure need paint in the morning and (figuring that we could make a donut or bagel run for breakfast) I can go to the grocery store while the guys are painting and pick up food for lunch. What ended up happening is that I learned a very important painting lesson at the painting store. Actually a few lessons.

Lesson #1 - Make sure you keep the paint sample testers of the paint you want and throw away the paint not selected. When your husband asks which one can be thrown away, really pay attention to this as you may inadvertantly have him throw away the incorrect can. This meant that when we went back to the store to pick out the real paint at 8:30pm on a Friday night I had one correct paint color sample and one incorrect paint color sample. As I have full pregnancy brain symptoms of late, and I was tired, I honestly couldn't remember if the 'light' color for the wall was the light color on the color card or the medium color.

Lesson #2 - When in doubt about the color, don't buy anything. I finally decided that the light color on the wall HAD to be the light color on the paint sample card and the dark color on the wall was the medium color on the paint sample card with 50% more color added. We got home and painted the two colors and I realized that I was very, very wrong. The light color wasn't a color I'd even selected as one of my paint tester samples. Oddly enough the medium color with 50% more color added looked like the light color on my walls. Yet, I knew (and yes, I was right) that the lighter color from the original tester samples was not the 50% added color from the color card but the medium color on the color card. So how does a meduim color paint suddently become a medium color +50% paint? That brings us to lesson #3.

Lesson #3 - If you want to paint using paint brand A you need to get a sample size of paint brand A paint. When I originally picked out my colors and paint samples I was told that the store was out of BEHR paint (which I wanted to use as it had the primer build into the paint) but that the Martha Stewart brand would give the exact same colors. So I got Martha Stewart based paint samples to test my colors. I went home, painted colors, picked out the two I wanted (after much debate) and 'knew' what to get when we went back to the store. Well, the picking out colors fiasco of lesson #2 I realized that the different in base paint made a HUGE difference in actual color on wall. The Martha Stewart brand paint went on darker than the BEHR brand paint. So whereas Martha Stewart paint required the medium and dark paints from the color card to get the look I wanted, the BEHR paint required the medium paint from the color card + 50% additional color and the dark paint from the color card needed an additional 75% of color.

Hopefully I haven't lost y'all in this painting extravaganza. Bascially it took three trips to the paint store to get the correct colors that I'd decided on two weeks prior due to the lessons learned as described above.

In the end I turned a very dark green and blue room into a light and airy tan and brown room. We (or I) decided on the light and darker brown with white trim theme because, not knowing what the gender of our baby is, meant I had to use neutral colors. Additionally, if we ever want to use this smallest bedroom as an office instead of a nursery it will be painted a color that makes sense for an office. Not a fan of having butterflies or baseballs in the office. :-)

A big thank you to Nate's parents for all the hard work (all the painting was finished in less than two days!) and to Nate for putting up with my indecision in decided paint colors.

Before picture - the dark blue and green colors are not done justics in this picture. They were MUCH darker in person. Imagine a dark cave that just happened to be blue/green.

A view of the newly painted room with just sunlight peeking in. LOVE IT!!!

A view of the newly painted room with the lights on and the sun at our front.

Soon-to-be Mom and Dad in the new room. Oddly enough this was one of three times I was allowed in the room while it was being painted. Nate was very concerned about me breathing in paint fumes so he wouldn't let me go in to check on progress but just a few times. The times I did get to peek in (which was only to give my opinion on colors) I had to leave right away. He still won't let me stay in the room very long as there's still a slight odor. He's such an awesome husband and dad-to-be!!!

24 Weeks

24 weeks!!! (Well, at least when this picture was taken last week :->)

So far, so good. Starting to feel a bit more tired at the end of the day (not as bad as the first trimester, but definitely feeling less frisky than just a few weeks ago) and definitely having more sleepless night, but liking the "I'm definitely pregnant look". I can still see my feet although bending over has definitely become more of a chore. I know take a second to see if I can pick that fallen item up with my feet or call Nate over instead of just grabbing it up. Finally, I'm starting to feel baby kick a lot more. Usually it's when I'm sitting down at work or laying down in bed at night but it's so nice to be having a quiet moment and then feeling my little guy or girl start kicking away. :-)

Maybe Baby?

Last night I think I felt the baby move for the first time. Nate and I were laying in bed just chit-chatting before calling it a night when I suddenly felt this weird movement like my stomach had flip-flopped, but instead of being felt where my stomach is the feeling was really low on the left side of my belly. Previously when I wondered if a movement was the baby or not I kept it to myself and just pondered and felt my belly a little bit more. This time I didn't even think before blurting out to Nate that I thought I'd felt the baby move. Faster than the blink of an eye, Nate had his hand on my belly trying to see if he could feel anything. (Too cute!) I moved his hand to where I'd felt the movement before and then we both just stayed in that position talking for another ten minutes. Unfortunately I didn't feel anything after that one weird movement. But after talking to my nurse today (at my regular monthly appointment) she's pretty much guaranteed me that what I felt was indeed the baby and in the coming weeks I should start feeling more consistent movements that won't be guesses at all. Too bad for Nate because it'll be about another six weeks before he feels anything major. Can't wait to feel this baby again!!!

Halfway There!

I'm currently 20 weeks pregnant, which means I'm officially half-way done with my pregnancy. Um, how did that happen! I mean it feels like time has gone by, but not this much time! It feels like I just got over the first trimester sickeness and exhaustion and here I am racing towards the third trimester and having my baby in my arms. Oh, gosh, I can't wait for that moment. :-)

Belly at 20 Weeks

To give out some fun stats I started weighing myself and measuring my stomach at the ten week mark (thanks for the tip, Celeste!) so from that point until now I've gained 10 pounds and my waist is currently 43.5 inches. Yes, I'm that big around. Yes, I fully anticipate getting even bigger. It's funny how the weight to waist ratio is going, though. While I'm steadily gaining weight my waist seems to grow in spurts. For almost a month I was at 42 inches and then one week I just felt stretched to the max and, sure enough, next time I measure I'd thrown an inch and a half up to my current measurement. I expected that the weight and waist would have grown more together, so that's one surprise I've experienced. Other surprises since finding out I was pregnant include:

* How much food I can eat in a day when I'm really hungry
* How little food I can eat in a sitting since I get full so quickly
* How getting up for a bathroom break every night is now a normal night and not getting up is a surprise
* How weak I can be (can't life the heavy weights I used to, walking quickly tires me out, getting up quickly can make me lose my breath, etc)
* How much my body has changed in these few months (my breasts and belly are definitely bigger, my back arches a LOT more, my rings are harder to take off due to swollen fingers, I WADDLE when I walk)
* How indecisive I am when figuring baby things out - I really thought I'd be more firm or confident in my opinions and decisions
* How quiet I can be when I don't like something but don't want to make waves (no, my belly is not your playtoy because I won't say a thing if you touch me)
* How awesome Nate is as a husband!!!!

So these past 20 weeks have been pretty darn awesome (especially once I hit that fabulous second trimester) and I'm looking forward to the next 20 weeks and all it has to bring me. Onward to goal of baby in my arms!

Fifth Disease Scare

Had a bit of a scare with something called Fifth Disease, so named as it was the fifth discovered classical childhood skin rash. It's sometimes called Slapped Cheek Disease as people with this rash tend to have bright red cheeks as one of the symptoms. My co-worker called me on Friday to say that she had just found out that her daughter had been diagnosed with this Fifth Disease and that, while she wasn't currently contagious, at one point in time she had been. Since the child was contagious she could have given the rash to her mom (my co-worker) who in turn could have exposed the rash to me.

Of course contacting this rash as an adult (or even as a child) is not usually a big deal. The rash goes away in a few weeks and other than some mild flu-like symptoms most people recover without a problem. Being pregnant, however, is another story. Mom's who contact Fifth Disease can pass this along to their unborn child where the child can get a condition called Hydrops fetalis which can lead to severe anemia, severe low birth weight, or miscarriage (early or late-term).

Let's just say that while I really didn't think I'd caught this as I hadn't had ANY symptoms and my last close contact with my co-worker had been a week or two prior I wasn't going to temp fate. I left a message on my Doctor's on-call phone and got a call back within ten minutes where I was instructed to head down to the local lab to get some blood drawn. I asked the nurse and she said it would be probably two-four days before we got the results of the blood draw back, so I shouldn't expect to know anything until sometime next Wednesday. I guess I figured that since this was the earliest I would know, I would try not to worry and just believe that all was well.

Imagine my surprise when this morning (less than 24 hours after the blood draw) my Doctor called me back to give me the test results. It appears that I was exposed to Fifth Disease sometime in my past and have great antibodies for it, so 1) I don't currently have this and 2) I'm well guarded against getting it in the future. Baby is still safe inside me. Yeah! I must give props to my Doctor (Dr. Lorenzo from Arbor Healthcare for Women) as I never expected to hear from this clinic on a Saturday and by the Doctor himself. I am SOOOOOOO glad I switched from my previous OB/GYM clinic (I'll just keep that name to myself, but if you really want to know -just ask) to Arbor Healthcare. I feel like a real person with a real human inside of me rather than a patient number on a chart. This is just another example of how awesome this new place is!

18 Week Ultrasound

We had our 18 week ultrasound done on Tuesday. It was AMAZING seeing this little person on the screen. The previous ultrasound showed a small blog that seemed to look like a person but this latest ultrasound looked like a really tiny baby. It was neat to see the difference that a few weeks made.

In the last ultrasound you could barely get the little guy to stay still. He was bouncing and flipping and moving around so much. This time he still flipped around but it was much calmer. Almost like he knew we were looking for him and he wanted to make sure we saw him clear as day. The ultrasound technician was great. She even got us a picture of his little feet (I don't have that in picture format now, but if I get it I'll post on the blog later). We also saw this oh so tiny heart beating away steadily. I wonder how women used to do it when they had no idea of what the person inside of them looked like he they were actually here. I'm definitely glad for modern technology in that respect.

We also had our first chance to tell the Doctor's office that we didn't want to know the sex of the baby. Everyone was really supportive of that decision and many actually said they were excited to see us take that route. So, here's to another 22 weeks before we meet him or her. Oh, I can't wait for that moment!

Due Date and Ultrasound

I realized that I never did mention in my last post when this baby would make its arrival. Whoops! Our due date is February 24, 2011. But who knows if the baby will arrive then. My mom was late with each of us kids so I'm wondering if the baby will arrive before, on, or after Nate's and my first wedding anniversary. I'm actually hoping for a March birthday. Mostly because that would mean that my family would be celebrating birthdays in February, March, April, May, June, September, October, and November. We'd just be missing July, August, December, and January. Not too shabby having a birthday almost every month! So, here's to a March baby. :-)

Also thought you might enjoy our first ultrasound picture. When I was 11 weeks I went to the doctor's to hear the heartbeat. Well, it ended up turning out the way I wanted it to but I should have known better. See I really wanted to get an ultrasound picture of the baby to have real, physical proof that I was pregnant (nope, the nausea and weight gain were not enough). I'd been told that if the doctor couldn't find the heartbeat I'd get an ultrasound to confirm so I thought this plan was a decent one. Until it actually happened! The doctor tried searching for the heartbeat with the doppler and just couldn't find anything so he left to go get the ultrasound machine. Those 20 minutes that he was gone were some of the longest in my life. In my heart I knew the baby was still there, but mentally I was a basketcase. All I could think about was that this baby which I so wanted was gone. Nate did a great job talking to me about this and that to distract me but all I wanted was for the doctor to come back and tell me that my baby was okay. Finally the doctor came back and within seconds of turning the machine on we saw our baby. Yep, all was okay and worrying was for naught. I definitely learned my lesson though, no more wishing for a short-term bad outcome to get a long-term positive.

11 Week Ultrasound.

Baby's head is on the left with his legs on the right. He's on his back (we're seeing a side view) and kicking his legs towards his head. It was amazing seeing how fast he was flipping, twisting, turning, and just moving around. From one shot to the next he'd be upside down, rightside up, left, then right. No wonder I had nausea! I had a jumping bean in my tummy.

First Comes Love, Then Come Marriage, Then...

I'M PREGNANT!!!

And holy hannah but I haven't blogged anything for a while. In my defense, I'll say that the first trimester of pregnancy was not exactly a cup of tea and I basically have not had blogging energy until now. But...now that I am feeling better (and we've officially passed the first trimester of miscarriage uncertainly) expect a LOT of posts henceforth!

Without further ado....I'M PREGNANT!!! :-)

After Nate and I got married we decided that we didn't want to wait to have kids. We figured that we both knew we wanted kids in this marriage, that we didn't feel the need to be married a certain amount of time before trying to have kids, and well, we weren't exactly spring chickens either with Nate being 31 and me 29 at the time of vows (totally got the married before 30 in!). Mom kept telling me that from the time we started trying to conceive it would take us between six months to a year to finally get the Big Fat Positive (BFP) pregnancy result. So, with this in mind, we sorta-kinda started trying right after the honeymoon. By this I mean we had fun and waited till the end of the month to see if a baby was created or not.

About 3 months after getting married (later part of June) I realized that my time to start was quickly approaching but I wasn't having any of the normal symptoms. I'm a 'one and done' type of cramping girl and frankly I was feeling constant little cramps all day long. When it came to the time that I was a week late I took a pregnancy test thinking that maybe I was pregnant. Nope, test came back negative. Oh, well, I'd start soon. Well, the next morning I just had to take another pregnancy test. Again, negative. By this time I was a week and a half late and that's just not something that happens. I decided to wait a few more days until I was officially a week and a half late (giving myself three extra days to start just in case). Friday morning arrived with great anticipation. This time I decided to try a little experiment. Previously I'd been testing with these free pregnancy test strips that came in the mail and no matter how badly I needed to use the restroom I was never able to fill the cup enough to reach the test's Max Line. I figured I'd be sneaky this time. I tested with two strips! One I bent a little so that the Max Line was reached and the other I didn't bend in the cup at all so that it was kept straight (wondering if the bending was causing problems) about 1/8th below the Max Line. Waited the three minutes and this time even the Test line didn't show! Both tests were dummies! Well, I'd had enough. I got dressed and headed to Wal-Mart with a plan to buy a digital test no matter the cost. Then I had to go home and wait 2 hours to, well, have to go again.

The two hours took forever! Finally it was time to test again. I did my business then set the test on the counter telling myself not to peak. Okay, I peaked just to make sure the hour glass was turning to make sure the test worked. A few seconds later I totally peaked again and what I saw made my heart explode with joy, my eyes start bawling, and my mouth thanking God again and again.

A POSITIVE pregnancy test!!!

My first 'belly' picture.
5 Week Belly

I'M PREGNANT!!! The next part was hard because I didn't know if I should call Nate right away and tell him, if I should tell him before heading out to join friends at Cool Desert Nights for the evening, wait until after we got home, or even keep the info to myself for a while. I ended up keeping the secret all to myself until we got home later that evening from hanging out with friends. It was funny because the whole day people kept joking about when we were going to get pregnant and Nate kept sassing them right back. Little did they know that the secret smile I had on my face wasn't because I was looking forward to being pregnant but because I WAS!

That evening as we were getting ready for bed I told Nate that I had a surprise for him. I plopped a toolbelt onto the bed as the first 'gift' he was going to get that night. I told him that it was because he was going to be doing a lot of fixing up around the house in the future. With him having a confused look on his face I then pulled out the positive pregnancy test and told him I was pregnant. Oh, how I wish I'd been able to take a picture of his face. It was a face that was so surprised and filled with such joy. I guess I'll just have to cherish the memory I'll always have of this moment. After telling Nate I was pregnant he was just so adorable. Immediately started questioning how I was feeling, if him having a little cold might hurt the baby, could I feel anything move, and over and over repeating that he was going to be a dad, that I was pregnant, and hugging me. It was honestly the best, most awesomest response he could have given. The next day he started right in on the house to-dos with putting up my kitchen counter lights (see previous post!).

From this point on the next three months were exciting, and well, lots of feelings of sick and tired. I felt pretty good for probably another 2-3 weeks after finding out we were pregnant, but by week number 8 I was down for the count. I rarely threw up but golly did I feel nauseous all the time. And by golly do I mean all the time. I would wake up wanting to throw up and go to bed the same way. Getting through a nine hour work day took up all my energy. I would come home and lay on the couch until it was time for bed. On weekends it was normal to get up after ten hours of sleep then go down again in a few hours for a two-four hour nap. I felt like I was sleeping all the time and I know I was slacking on the housework. Thank goodness for Nate. He recognized my state of being and graciously took over the cleaning, laundry, cooking, and somewhat the grocery shopping. I honestly don't know how we would have survived those weeks without him stepping up without complaint.

12 Week Belly

Now that I've officially entered the second trimester I'm feeling great, so long as I don't do anything stupid (as Nate says). I'm even back to working out with my trainer! I'm officially in maternity clothes 100% of the time but thanks to some great friends (thanks Caren and Monica!) I've only had to buy a few pants. Otherwise I think I'm covered until baby gets here. I guess at this point in time the 'weird' things that I've noticed are crazy, vivid dreams (Planet of the Bears anyone?), a belly button that no longer looks or feels the same (my innie/outie is now a larger innie only), and a general feeling of being big. Once again it's Nate to the rescue as he reminds that I'm he still finds me sexy and that I'm supposed to feel this way. I suppose it's just a little hard because I weigh more now than I ever have (even at my heaviest post college), so the feel-good reminders from him do a lot for my self-esteem. Oh, the other 'weird' thing is that I can't turn over normally anymore. I sort of have to heave-ho my body to one side then turn as fast as I can to the other to get out of bed. Hee. It's a fun ritual every morning.

16 Week Belly

At this point I'm feeling a little bit more urgency for baby shopping for cribs, bedding, etc but mostly I'm still a little too worn out from work to do much on the computer when I get home at night. I'm hoping that the weekends will be a little freer for baby time! Some of the next big purchases need to be a crib, a few bedding pieces to get color ideas, then paint that matches the bedding pieces to repaint the nursery. Internet searches will be on cloth diapers (Nate really wants to give this a try, so I'm willing), pediatricians, and car seats. I still have months left so I'm not too worried. Besides, I always work best under pressure. :-)

So that's my pregnancy story so far. I'm actually really glad I finally got this blog up because now I feel like I can actually talk about stuff without having to keep quiet about the baby. Plus, with feeling better I can post more than "Didn't puke today - yeah" stories.

I did want to finish by saying to all mom's out there, your advice is welcome and appreciated. I'm a newbie at this so if you're more than 17 weeks along, have an infant, or have multiple kids you're more experienced than I and I look to you for advice. Bring it!

Under the Counter Lights

I finally am getting my under the counter kitchen lights!

Back when we bought the house we knew that the lighting in the kitchen needed help. There were a lot of windows to give light during the daytime, but at night the kitchen had a lot of dark spots that made food prep a little bit difficult. We'd find that we'd move over to the bar counter for everything which ended up spreading mess around and not having necessary cooking items at a hand's reach.

This afternoon I went down for a nap (yeah, I know but too many sleepless nights this week meant I wasn't really good for anything besides watching tv) and when I woke up three of the five lights were installed! After taking a late afternoon lunch Nate went back to installing the other two lights. I got a pre-view of four lights in (right after this picture was taken) and it's AMAZING how bright the kitchen is now with all the lights on. No more dark sports! It feels like our entire kitchen's counters are useful again instead of just a few select spots. Looks like I need to take more naps to get more honey-dos done!

Mindy's Wedding

On June 4, 2010 my cousin Mindy married the love of her life, Derrick. It was a very elegant, intimate affair of close family and friends in the Hollywood Schoolhouse in Woodinville, WA. The day was, well, really, really rainy. :-) Of course, some wedding traditions say a rainy wedding is a sign of good luck for your future marriage so the happy couple must be very lucky!

One of the best parts of Mindy getting married was getting the family together again. I'm sure I've mentioned this before, but it's been great having the family get together so frequently this year. Three times in three months! Of course, we've decided to continue to streak with graduation ceremonies, camping trips, and general get-togethers. Woo hoo! Now, back to the wedding.

Cousin Al, Cousin Mary P, Uncle Bobby, and Aunt Nancy in their finest.

Mom, Grandma, and Myself looking stylish.

The Hollywood Schoolhouse was a schoolhouse in a former life, then an antique shop, and now it's a conference/wedding venue. Boy, was it pretty with curved staircases, lots of windows, and white everywhere. It was the perfect background for the elegant, white and pewter wedding and with only 100 seats it offered a very intimate setting. We walked through the first open room where the reception tables were setup into the second room where the ceremony would be. Greeting us were white pillars, lots of white flowers and greenry, and sunshine peeking through the windows and rain. When the ceremony started it was sweet seeing my cousin Kent escort his wife Shirley and Grandma down the aisle. It was a happy moment as well when my Uncle Roger walked Mindy down the aisle. Her dress floated around her making her look like the princess she was aiming for.

Mindy and Derrick saying their vows.

Now, every wedding has 'the moment'. The one thing where something humorous happens to entertain the guests. Mindy and Derrick's moment happened during the vows. The couple had written their own vows and really wanted to mention emotions and actions that were important to the both of them. Well, one thing that was innocently written but humorously taken was Derrick's vow to 'always play with' Mindy. :-) I'm sure they meant this as having humor, laughter, and fun in their life with their four-wheelers and such but the guests took a different route and ended up laughing. All in fun of course!

Mindy and Derrick taking their first bite of wedding cake.

Their first dance.

Once the vows were said a lovely dinner reception was held. My favorite part the yummy spinach and gorgonzola salad and baron of beef. It wasn't until I sat down to eat that I realized that it was 8pm and I hadn't eaten since noon. Golly I was hungry! After dinner we too got to taste the cake and I have nothing but rave reviews. So many times you attend a wedding and the cake is so dry. Both the chocolate and lemon cakes were just yummy. Thankfully there were many people at my table sharing pieces of cake so I could get away with having bites of both without having to eat two whole pieces.

After dinner, cake, toasts, and the first couples and father/daughter dances it was time to party! I must admit I was happy to see that the dance lessons that Nate and I had taken for our wedding were still useful as Nate and I enjoyed using these previously learned steps to waltz the night away. Or I enjoyed this time and Nate was gracious enough to dance with me. Your choice! Mom and I also got a dance in when both Dad and Nate pleaded a beer run. :-)

Mom and I waltzing!

The whole family got into the fun of dancing with YMCA being a favorite. It's fun to waltz but it's also fun to just get a big crowd together and boogie!

Performing YMCA

Conga line!

At the end of the evening we hugged and said our good-byes with Mindy and Derrick then headed back to my Auntie Sue's house for the after party. There the Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins opened up bottles of wine and Jack and toasted the couple again. Finally, it was time to call it a night and head to bed. Overall, I had a lovely time at the wedding and was thrilled to see the couple profess their love to each other. I can't wait to see what life brings them in the coming years.

Memorial Weekend Camping - A Dangerous Activity

Over Memorial Day Weekend a group of us went camping at La Wis Wis. This was the third year of camping at La Wis Wis over the weekend and we knew we were in store for rest, relaxation, and just a darn good time around the campfire. Going up on Thursday were my parents, Andrew, Jessica, Karen, Nate, and myself. We quickly got all the trucks and SUVs unloaded and the camping equipment set up as we knew that the rain was soon to be upon us. Luckily the rain stopped right as we drove into the campsite and stayed away until the last tent was set up. That night we heated up Taco Salad, passed around the drinks, and settled in for some good chit-chatting.

The next morning, after gloriously being allowed to sleep in, we began the days activites of sitting and doing nothing. :-) Well, almost. We started out the day hundled under all the tarps and canopies staying dry while reading books but after a few hours the guys decided that we needed more firewood and that the fallen trees around us would be a great opportunity to get free wood. So out came the axes and manliness. Everything was going smoothly. Girls were reading, boys were doing firewood. Then suddenly a large snap sounded at the exact moment that Nate was trying to chop a limp into smaller pieces. I looked up and saw Nate with his hand to his cheek and taking a few steps rather dazily. Then he took his hand away from his face and blood started to freely fall. I quickly got up (or as quickly as I could since I had Lily, my Mom's Shih Tzu tucked in my jacket) and went towards Nate. Mom got him quickly sitting in a chair while Jessica ran to grab the first aid kit. I tossed Lily to my Dad, or at least I think I did. One moment Lily was in my jacket the next she wasn't. Then I grabbed cleaning wipes and began to clean the blood, dirt, and outdoor yuck off of his face. The wound was probably a good inch gash across his cheek that went several centimeteres into his skin. There were also scrapes above and below the gash where the tree limb had hit, and bruises forming from chin to eye. It took quite a few cleansing wipes just to get all the dirt off his face and out of the wound. Finally, he was cleaned up enough to put a bandage on. Or the first of many bandages. The first bandage was a large piece of gauze with gauze tape across his face. (As shown below.)

After this gauze picture Nate then had a large band-aid, a medium size band-aid, and finally a small band-aid. Each time we checked the wound, cleaned it up a bit, applied Neosporin, and then checked to see if any of his facial numbness had worn off. The rest of the weekend was a lot more relaxful as we made Nate sit that whole first day. :-) Then it was hiking, sleeping in, the Packwood Flea market, and a trip to Miner's on the way home.

Now that we're home Nate still has a gash on his cheek but it's healing nicely. The numbness in his face is still there, but it is getting a little bit better every day. I figure he took such a hit that it may take a while for his facial nerves to fully come back online. Well, he had a cute smile before and he'll have a cute smile afterwards even if it is a little lopsided. :-)

Gang Graffiti

Can someone please explain to me why people feel the need to vandalize other people's property? At what point in someone's life do they decide that they're going to be a blight on society instead of a productive member? Is it an actual decision or just a path that they turn down after one too many times of making bad choices?

Obviously, we got tagged with gang graffiti. It was kind of a scary deal, too, as the night this occurred was the night that Nate was out of town. I'd sent Nate off to his out of town meeting and was settling in for a night of junk food and Lost when I heard a knock on the door. Seeing as it was 8:30pm at night and we don't know the neighbors too well I was a little concerned about who was at the door. Upon opening the door I found this hulking man on the other side. He introduced himself as one of our neighbors (at which time I did remember that we'd previously met) and asked if I'd seen what was done to the side of our fence. I hadn't so I followed him around to the side of the house where I saw that someone had spray painted gang graffiti on our pretty white fence.

The graffiti on our fence

Now I wasn't upset so much about the cost of fixing the fence as it obvious that a can of white paint would do the job, but I was upset that someone hooligan had vandalized my property, interrupted my 'alone' night, and made me nervous about being in the house by myself. Luckily, my neighbor informed me that he worked at the local Justice Center and had a few phone numbers for me to contact to deal with the problem. I felt better just knowing that someone who obviously worked with problems was nearby to help if I ran into a serious one. Well, I contacted the police that night to report the crime (that sounds so, I don't know, intense) and to see what the next steps were in fixing the fence. An hour or so later a policeman stopped by the house and let me know that a lot of areas were hit with graffiti that night, that we have a problem house nearby when the mom isn't home, and to call if there were any future problems. Again, it was nice knowing that help was just a short call away.

The next day, I figured that it would be better for me to quickly fix the problem than have Nate have to come home to it after a long day of driving. With a quick trip to Wal-Mart and a few minutes of my time I was able to paint over the graffiti and no longer be 'that' neighbor that begins the downhill slide of the neighborhood by not taking care of their property. A quick resolution to an annoying problem.

All in all I was pretty proud of myself. I calmly took care of the situation by reporting the crime and fixing the problem. Of course, I still grin a little at the double checking of all windows and doors to make sure every possible entrance into the house was locked up. :-)

Happy 90th Birthday, Grandma!

On May 22, 2010 my Grandmother acheived a rarely obtained goal. She celebrated her 90th birthday!!! The day was extra special because instead of just celebrating with her siblings, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren the whole family got invited. Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, First Cousins Once Removed, Second Cousins, Brothers, Sisters, Children, Grandchildren, Great-Grandchildren, Neighbors, and Friends. My Auntie Sue's house, where the party was hosted, was brimming with people in every room that you wondered in to. At one point in time I looked around and realized that the 'old' people were sprawled in the kitchen, dining room, and living room eating lunch while the 'young' people were crammed and smashed onto the deck around two tiny tables that fit a third of those that were there. Just funny how everyone segregated themselves.

The day was also made a little more special due to Aunt Genie and Cousins Stacy and Kayla. See, my Mom's side of the family was always known for getting together and playing instruments. Guitar, piano, trumpet, harmonica you name it. And singing was a requirement that everyone joined in on. But as time went by, and especially with the death of my Granfather back in 1992, signing and music has slowly been going by the wayside of our get togethers. Sure, Auntie Sue will occasionally burst into song but there aren't the living room sing alongs anymore. Gosh, I just realized how much I miss those moments. Anyway, back to the point. These three ladies brought song and music back to our gatherings! They created the cutest song and strummed their guitars while they sang about my Grandma, getting older, and being loved. I wish I could remember the exact words but the song contained both sweet and funny moments. I really think Grandma got a kick out of this.

The other special time of the weekend was just getting the family together again. With Uncle Bobby and Aunt Nancy living in Roseburg, OR, Auntie Sue and Uncle Roger living in Kirkland, WA, and my parents in West Richland, WA it's hard to get the entire family together at one time. Between everyone there's my grandmother, three children and their spouses, nine grandchildren and their spouses, and three great-grandchildren for a total of 28 people. That's a decent amount to get around the kitchen table all at once. :-)

The funny part is that this year I'll probably see this side of the family more than I've seen them in the last five years. Between Nate and I getting married, my Granma's 90th birthday party, and Mindy and Derrick's wedding (cousins) we'll have seen each other three times in three months! And that's not including the holiday season, the camping trips, and the graduations. Family is awesome!

Well, grandma, thanks for the fun weekend and I'm looking forward to the 95th birthday bash! I love you!

How Do You Study the Bible?

So how do you study the bible? By this I mean how do you read the bible when you're not at church? Do you just open up the Bible, turn to a page and start reading? Or do you follow a study guide that tells you what to read during certain days and then gives you questions/answers to ponder? Do you follow readings that your church provides? Or do you read so many chapters a night starting at Genesis and going through Revelation until you reach the final verse?

I'm thinking that I'd like to start studying the bible as opposed to just reading random passages, but I'm not sure how I want to begin this and thought I'd see how others do it to maybe glean some ideas. If you're okay telling me how you study the Bible, I'd be very interested to know.

Calling All Canners

I would like to start canning. I remember many summers watching my Mom can jam for the family and would like to start the tradition with Nate and I. Personally I think homemade jam is the very best there is. Plus, I'd like to make and can salsa, pickled asparagus, beans, fruits, etc just to have on hand for yummy eating. The problem is that I'm not sure what type of canner to get. I've been doing a little research and it seems that the main ones on the market are pressure canners, boiling water canners, or combination pressure canner/cookers. For those of you out there who do canning, what type of canner do you like best and why? Thanks!

Vegas, Baby!

Work sent me to the COLLABORATE 10 Quest Conference in Las Vegas, so I'm currently writing this blog from the 31st floor of Thehotel at Mandalay Bay. I don't know why it's called Thehotel instead of The Hotel or even The Hotel at Mandalay Bay, but there you go. It's probably a cool and modern way of distinguishing this part of the hotel from the rest of the Mandalay Bay buildings, but I don't think I'm cool enough to get it. Every time I look at the way it's worded I keep thinking that someone made a spelling mistake. :-)

I'm really looking forward to this trip. Since I'm here for PeopleSoft Payroll 9.1 information, and there just isn't a lot to to be, I have quite a bit of free time on this conference. A lot, actually. Monday is a pretty full day with five or so conference sessions, but Tuesday only has two sessions, and Wednesday only one session. That leaves a lot of hours open and needing to be filled. Since I'm a good wife (hee, I'm a wife now!) I originally asked Nate if he wanted to join me for the conference and we could hang out during my off hours. Since we just got back from the honeymoon a month ago Nate didn't want to take the extra time off of work since he's a little short on vacation hours. So I asked him if it would be okay if I asked my Mom to join me since she's never been to Vegas and has mentioned going a few times. He thought this was a great compromise as I got my buddy to hang out with and he didn't have to take time off of work. I then called my Mom and gave her the official invite to join me. She screeched and said she'd call me right back. 30 minutes later she'd talked to my Dad to get his buy-in, called the airline to see about getting cheap tickets, made her airline reservation, found a few Vegas shows that she wanted to see, and asked her boss (and got his approval) for the time off. She was so excited! I don't think she'd ever made as big of trip plans as this in such a short amount of time. :-)

At this point I've checked into the hotel, checked into the conference, had dinner with the co-workers at the House of Blues in Mandalay Bay, and am now waiting for my Mom's plane to arrive. I'm not sure what the rest of the night will entail. Going out or staying in? Normally I'd say going out as it's her first night in the city, but we had a whirlwind weekend. My cousin, Mindy, had her wedding shower this past Saturday in Seattle that my Mom and I helped host. Friday morning we drove over to Seattle and stayed up until midnight chatting with my Auntie Sue and Grandma and getting everything ready for the shower. Saturday we woke up early, continued chatting and getting ready for the shower, had the shower, chatted more, and then drove home to the Tri-Cities getting in around 10:30pm. So with two late nights and two early mornings I'm not sure if she's going to want to head out tonight or get to bed early and sleep in and go out with a bang tomorrow night instead of a potential slow night tonight. Hmm, still not sure. Either way I'm goint to do whatever she wants. I remember my first time here and wanting to take in as many of the sites as possible right away. I certainly don't want to take any of that away from her simply because I'm tired and have been here before. I can sleep later!

Wedding Pictures

I finally got to see our wedding pictures! I'm absolutely amazed at the cute shots he got as well as the beautiful angles, so I thought I'd share them with everyone for their viewing pleasure.

If anyone that was at the wedding and/or reception took pictures, I would LOVE to see them. As many know I'm a big scrapbooker and am greatly looking forward to scrapping my wedding album. Additionally, if you're got some great shots that should be included in my scrapbook send them to Costco.com and let me know about it. I'll pay for the shots when I pick them up so you aren't put out any money.

Many thanks to everyone that has shown me their shots so far. I love seeing the moments throughout our day that I either didn't get to witness first-hand or that I was there for but it's a blur!

A Guys Night Out

Had to comment! I'm sitting at the kitchen table being as quiet as a churchmouse while Nate is having a guy's night. It's almost like being that fly on the wall that everyone wants to be at some time or another. It's funny to hear men in their 'man environment'. There's beer drinking, random silent moments when an explosion happens on TV, and then lots of talk about movies, beer, moments of stupidity, and what they're watching. I really do feel like a scientist observing my specimen, or like Captain Picard making sure his crew doesn't disobey the Prime Directive (don't interfere with the natives!). Have you ever been the lone female at guy night? How did you feel? Well, back to observing in silence!

Happy 30th Birthday to Me!

On April 1, 2010 I turned 30 years old. Woo Hoo! Years ago the though of turning 30 made me think of old, boring people. Now, I realize that turning 30 is just hitting my stride of life. I snuck in the getting married part, and just under the wire, too! I've got a great house that we just moved in to. Finally, not to get too personal, we're working on starting a family. :-)

To celebrate my 'big' day I first hung out with Nate's family during a three-part birthday celebration for Nate's dad, Nate's grandma, and myself. There, amongst family and friends, we went out to dinner, had yummy German Chocolate cake (made my Nate's grandma) and I got to open my fabulous gift from Nate. A new laptop!!! It was such an exciting present because I was totally surprised! I knew a laptop was in our future but I figured it would be months to a year or so down the road. Never did I expect it would be just a few days away from looking at one. The sneaky guy that Nate is, he got me to pick out my favorite one of the trip and then went back to the store later and bought it. I'm having so much fun with it that I forget I still have a desktop!

After the Carstens' family celebration Nate and I had a few friends over for dinner and one of them surprised me with another great homemade cake. Jessica knew of my love of Diet Pepsi and then made me a cake to remind me of that love. A pepsi logo! I loved it!

Next week, when my family has Haylee, we'll celebrate a third time! Three birthdays to celebrate my 30th is pretty darn cool. I guess the only downside to having our wedding so close to my 30th birthday is that I didn't really have enough time to plan a huge celebration for all my friends. Plus, with all the gifts people so generously gave us for the wedding celebration, I didn't feel right turning around and having another gift potential event. So we'll just have to throw a big party for my 40th!!!

Me with my cake full of 30 candles!

A view of the Diet Pepsi logo cake that Jessica made for me!

The Honeymoon

The Tuesday after the wedding Nate and I headed off to Playa del Carmen, Mexico for our honeymoon. Playa (as the locals call it) is about an hour south of Cancun and has none of the Spring Break crowd but all of the local culture that Mexico has to offer. The hotel we stayed at was an all-inclusive resort called Playacar Palace. I would HIGHLY recommend this place. The hotel itself was very airy and open, the staff was amazing, the food was pretty darn good, but the location was fabulous! We were literally steps from the beach, half a block from the ferry to Cozumel, and a half block from Avenue de Quinta (5th Avenue) a six block long shopping strip with everything from high end botiques to shops that you thought were a little too, um, local looking. Our days were filled with, literally, whatever we wanted to do. The first two or three days we slept in, walked Avenue de Quinta, played in the ocean, napped, and played chess.

A view of our hotel room's living area. We had a great honeymoon suite with a wonderful balcony right off the bedroom.

I have to tell you about chess! I've never played before but the hotel had this huge chess set with pieces that were at least two feet high. The first day we played Nate showed me how all the pieces moved and then proceeded to kick my butt in the fastest game every played. The next night I did a little better but Nate still easily beat me. By the third night, though, I started holding my own a little and Nate had to pay more attention to his moves as I started to steal a few of his pieces. The last night we played I triumphed! Nate was getting a little cocky and I easily stole his Queen without him evening noticing my move! Then, I was able to take his Knight and he had no way to realiate. Finally, I was able to say check...mate? Sure enough, we looked, and without him evening beginning to fully realize my awesomness I had checked his King. Yes, in five nights I had not only learned the game of chess but the student beat the teacher. Woo Hoo!

The other neat part about playing chess was that the game was always in the same place. So when we played each night we happened to play next to the main outdoor bar. The bar tender, Carlos, was on each night and got to recognize us and our drink order. The time came when our drinks were empty and instead of waiting for us to come back up to the bar for a refill, Carlos brought a second round out to us. By the end of the week Carlos would spot us heading in his direction and begin our drink order while having those at the bar wait a bit longer. Yes, we tipped him well for this service but it was still pretty awesome of him to do so in the first place.

The view of the beach and the ferry to Cozumel from our balcony. Had we jumped we would have landed on the beach. 10 steps later, the ocean!

While we mainly dined at the hotel's restaurants, it being all-inclusive and all, we did get out onto Avenude de Quinta for food, shopping, and people watching. Pretty much every day found us leasurely strolling through the street, stopping to browse or shop some stores, and catching the local sights.

Here's a picture of Avenue de Qunita from where we stopped to have lunch one day. Notice how empty the street is! According to our hotel the area was only at 60% capacity. Definitely a smaller set of tourists.

During our lunch, these gentleman serenaded us. The only song ANY of the players sang (not just these three but any of the number of singers) was La Bamba in Spanish. I guess they figured we gringos would know it and therefore be happier.

Nate really liked this shop. They rolled their own cigars right in front of you. The other neat thing was that the climate was just right enough that they hung the tobacco from the ceiling to dry. When you walked into the shop it smelled like a gentleman's club.

We did get away from Playa on one day. We decided to go to Chi Chen-Itza, which is one of the most well known Mayan cities in Mexico. Our day was definitely an adventure. First, Nate woke up not feeling too well, but knowing how much I wanted to see the ruins (I did offer to stay home that day and head out another day I'd like to add) he said that he'd be just fine and we would continue to see the ruins. Then our 2.5 hour drive (which we knew about) to the ruins turned out to start out by spending about an hour or so picking up other tourists from their hotels on the way to the ruins. Additionally, we stopped for lunch at some buffet place that you know existed just to feed the people going to the ruins. A little different from my idea of heading out to the ruins on a small tour bus and getting meal tickets for the on-site luncheon. So by 1:30pm we had started out on our bus ride, picked up additional tourists, shopped (I didn't buy anything, though) at a gift shop, and had eaten lunch. Notice that there was no actual ruin touring yet. Nope, we didn't get the ruins until 1:45pm.

On the way to the ruins we saw this contruction site. A tad bit more lose on the safety culture than what I'm used to at work.

We finally got to the Chi Chen-Itza ruins and proceeded to get a guided tour by our tour guide. We learned about the importance of the snake to the Mayan people (the snake takes 360 days before it sheds its skin then five days to shed it's skin - where we get our 365 day calendar), the importance of the sun and equinox in relationship to the temple (as the year passes the sun sets further and further down the side of the temple - when it's planting season the sun shines on the snake statue at the bottom of the temple), the importance of the warrior from the Tuloc influence (the majority of the stones in the various buildings had carvings of the different types of warriors on them), among other things. Our guide was full of knowledge and really funny. He even made a cute little joke when we saw an iguana. "How do you tell the boy iguanas from the girl iguanas? The boys go like this (he nodded his head yes) and the girls go like this (he shook his head no). :-) About this time the sickness that Nate had felt earlier started to rear its ugly head. On the last ruin (the ball field - where they held ceremonial games) Nate had to step away and keep from throwing up. Due to shade and lots of water he kept his stomach down, but I knew it was time to leave the ruins and go sit a spell before the bumpy ride back. I think Nate felt better by doing so, but sleeping on the way home definitely did the trick. Rest was the plan for the end of the evening (and since we didn't get back until 8pm that's all we had time for) and by the next morning Nate was pretty much right as rain.

Nate and I in front of the main ceremonial temple. When explorers found it the jungle had taken over and trees and such were growing out of the sides of it. Archeologists used stones from two of the sides to completely rebuild the other two sides so we would have an idea of what the temple looked like.

Again, honeymoon-itis (or laziness) hit and we spent Saturday and Sunday sleeping in, playing in the ocean, and people watching. I have to interject that playing in the ocean was AWESOME!!! The first few days we were there the wind was really blowing and the waves were huge. So of course we had to jump them. I usually lasted an hour or so and then one too many big waves would knock me over getting water up my nose (salt water in the nose really hurts!) and I'd have to call Uncle and go sit on the beach for a while. The last few days we were there the waves were a lot calmer but every once in a while a sneaky one would come through and shove me to shore. Nate got a huge kick out of this. :-)

Well, early early Monday morning the sickness that Nate had came to settle in my system. I guess on the one hand I was lucky as I didn't have all the symptoms Nate had, but on the other hand the symptoms I had were much worse. I started throwing up at 1am Monday morning and proceeded to throw up every two hours from then on. At 12pm Nate finally decided that there was something really wrong and so he called the hotel's doctor to make a visit. One shot in the backside later and the nausea went from every two to every three or so hours. At 8pm I had a pretty bad episode that included breathing difficulties, so back the doctor came. This time with two shots in the backside. Yippee! One of the shots hurt so bad that it took me a good five minutes before I could do anything but moan. The funny part (yep, I see humor in everything) was that I had Nate make me an ice pack for one of the second shots. Since Nate had to pack for the flight home the next day I kept rearranging the ice pack until eventually I got it in a spot where the cold felt really good. About an hour later Nate wanted to make sure that the ice wasn't too close to my skin so as not to cause a cold burn. I twisted my hip and that's when we found out that the arrangement that had felt so good meant I was literally sitting on the ice. Needless to say Nate removed the ice pack :-) Oddly enough it took another two weeks for the one side of my backside to feel better. As I felt a HUGE knot I can only imagine I got some sort of muscle bruise from the shot that was just stubborn and didn't want to go away.

Me, Monday afternoon, not feeling well.

Finally, Tuesday morning arrived and it was time to come home. We both admitted that while we'd had a lot of fun in Mexico we were both excited to come home to our new house, our familar bed, and normal American food. So while we definitely recommend Mexico to people we also recommend taking anti-biotics, being extremely careful about not drinking any water, and not getting too upset with a day of sickness. Turns out EVERYONE we've talked to that has been to Mexico has gotten sick at least one day. Um, why didn't we hear these stories BEFORE we booked the honeymoon?! :-)

The sun rise from our hotel room on the last day of our honeymoon.

Now we're home and enjoying married life! I hope you've enjoyed these wedding posts as I've thoroughly enjoyed writing about all our activities. I suppose it'll be back to 'normal life' posts here on out, but I hope you stick around to read what we're up to. I enjoy reading about your lives as well!
